We say “briefly” because a short time afterwards, Polyphony announced it had found an issue with the 1.07 patch. When the game briefly returned, players found that developer Polyphony Digital had severely reduced the in-game payouts of the most lucrative races. In the wee hours of March 17, the latest Gran Turismo 7 game update was pushed out, and the online servers went down. Early reviews generally were pretty positive, with fellow journo and friend Adam Ismail saying “it might just remind you why you fell in love with cars in the first place” in his Jalopnik review. The latest in Sony’s long-running franchise launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on March 4. If you’re anything like us at AutoGuide, you’ve been scratching the GT7 itch this month. While it does feature single-player content, the game still requires a permanent online connection to do anything.The age of always-online gaming has its advantages-and, as Gran Turismo 7 is proving, its own problems. The series did see a release on PlayStation 4 with 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport, but its status as a true sequel is debated, considering it lacked a lot of content at launch, including any proper single-player modes. Gran Turismo 6 came out in 2013 for the PlayStation 3, meaning there was a near 10-year gap between it and Gran Turismo 7. Over on the games Metacritic page, its user score has fallen even further. With AAA game development having grown more expensive and time consuming, the gaps between Gran Turismo games have become longer as well. Gran Turismo 7 is still being review bombed in the wake of the PS5 racers latest swathe of controversial changes. It may not even come out until the PlayStation 6. While it’s entirely possible we’ll see the next Gran Turismo release later into the PlayStation 5’s lifecycle, it most certainly won’t release anytime soon.
